OLD GAELIC WINS OPENER

FAST FINISH FLOORS FREDERICK

The Old Gaelic Rugby Club opened its season with a 51-8 victory over visiting Frederick last Saturday at Williams Grove.  Team speed and ball-sharing were keys for the triumphant Griffins, who turned a slim 13-5 halftime advantage into a track meet.

Brian Ogle scored three tries – all in the second half – to lead the way.

In a match played with temperatures near 90 degrees, neither team could make hay early on.  Old Gaelic finally cashed in on Skipper Dan Roth’s penalty kick, but Frederick took a 5-3 lead on a fly-to-fullback feed.  The Black & Gold surged ahead on Justin Stefanon’s try on a dish by Dr. James Oliverio.  Roth added the conversion and another three-pointer for the midway margin.

After the break, it was all Old Gaelic.  Ken Orndorff got Frederick within 13-8 with a penalty kick before the hosts scored the final 38 points of the contest.  In addition to Ogle, tries were scored by Mark Olividetti, Chris Botto and on the final play of the match, Curtis Brillhart.  Dr. J had two assists and Botto, Stefanon and Roth each added helpers.

In the B match, a try by new-to-Old Gaelic Jason (assist Botto, conversion Dan Morris) wasn’t enough to stem the tide against Frederick, who won, 19-7.

Old Gaelic returns to action on Saturday at Williams Grove at 1 p.m. when it hosts Jersey Shore in the division lid-lifter.
