O CANADA
Old Gaelic defeated the Ajax Wanderers, 41-10, at Harrisburg's pitch
last Saturday. John Kroesen and Brian Ogle had two tries apiece as the
Black and Gold moved to 2-0 on the young season.
The generosity of the Harrisburg Rugby Club, who helped us when we were
in a jam, will never be forgotten.
The "hosts" got the scoring started on a swift spin to the outside that
culminated in a dot-down dish from Scott Lindsay to Ogle that was a
thing of beauty. Dan Roth, who managed to wrestle the kicking duties
away from Skinny, converted to make it 7-0. The Wanderers responded with
a penalty kick, which Roth matched to push Gaelic's lead to 10-3. The
talented athletes from Ajax, Ontario, tied it on a strong run by their
outside center.
A pair of tries by in the last five minutes of the half gave Old Gaelic
a 22-10 advantage at intermission. First, Pete Sharpe found veteran
Matty Graham from short range to finish off a movement that started with
chicanery in the short lineout. Then Matt Hart showed why his Crazy
Legs moniker is so appropriate when he scooped up a loose ball and
sprinted more than 30 meters to paydirt.
A penalty inside the 10 gave Old Gaelic a scoring opportunity early in
the second half. Roth eschewed the easy kick, which would have given
his squad a three-score lead, and adlibbed to Kroesen with a little
pitch that Special K plunged home. Lindsay again found Ogle and
Kroesen, despite food poisoning, gobbled up a cheap one by hustling on a
kick to complete a 21-0 scoring spurt by the victors.
Next, it was the HOGS (Harrisburg-Old Gaelic) against the Wanderers in
exciting Over-36 action. Tom Marasciullo scored a pair of tries and
Jamie Forbes and Larry Sweger set up three others as the locals doubled
their pleasure with a 27-0 triumph. The Wanderers, in a word, were
enormous, but the HOGS turned a close contest into a one-sided affair
with a 20-0 second-half spurt. Pyro also had two tries, both on Forbes'
feeds. Sweger found Bloomsburg's Ralph for the half's first tally.
Harrisburg players: Larry Sweger, Jamie Forbes, Anwar, Vasquez,
Gilmartin, John, Scooter, Pyro, Todd, Dennis Shade.
Old Gaelic players: Tom Marasciullo, Squatty Avery, Tunis, Jake, Jay
Abom, Dan Morris, Dan Reisman, Jerry Gould, Mark Cooley.
Congratulations to Dan, Angie and Jonah Roth on the arrival of Maya last
Monday! All are doing well. ... Apologies to all the following, whose
names were misspelled in last week's issue: Ivey, Donohue, Gallucci and
Pomraning. Please speak up if there were other errata. .... Last week's
score was actually 72-5. Sorry for the point inflation. ... Next up:
Happy Valley(A). ... Kudos and thanks to Huddle and Linda Pomraning for
hosting another excellent party.
