OLD GAELIC STORMS INTO MARFU SEMI’S
Old Gaelic Rugby Club advanced to the Mid-Atlantic Division III semi-finals for the third consecutive year with a 71-0 pasting of visiting Roanoke. With the win, the Black and Gold earned a berth in the final four at Quantico next weekend.
It was a dark and dreary afternoon. Things got brighter soon after kickoff when Skipper Dan Roth connected on a penalty kick and sent the Griffins on their way. Curtis Brillhart scored on a stolen hook and Brian Ogle converted to give the hosts a 10-0 advantage. Roth finished an individual move and Matt “Skinny” Pomraning had a scamper on a dish from Pete Sharpe as Old Gaelic took a 22-0 lead at intermission.
After the break, the scores came with frightful frequency. Roth and Ogle each added a pair of tries and John Kroesen, Wes Beard, Matt Graham, Brillhart and Scott Lindsay (in his season debut) all found the zone. Sharpe, Kroesen, Brillhart, Lindsay, Randy Smith and James Oliverio added assists.
In all, 21 players saw action. Chris Botto had an outstanding effort in his first “A” side start. There was, alas, no “B” game.
Thanks to the Pomranings (Linda and Huddle) and Man of the Match Skinny for hosting a fine affair. It was great to see John Lyons, Terry “Turkey”/”Goose” Overly and other notables in attendance.
Special thanks to Coach Dan Morris and President Frank Lentz for all their outstanding work on behalf of the organization.
